The Scarsdale Diet

The Scarsdale diet is named after the US city of Scarsdale, New York, where it was developed by the cardiologist Dr. Hermann Tarnów. The method makes it possible within 1-2 weeks a weight loss of about 450g per day under the condition that is eaten only carbohydrate and low-fat but high-protein food.The Scarsdale Diet

How does the Scarsdale Diet work?

The Scarsdale Diet or “Scarsdale Medical Diet” (SMD) consists of a 14-day program. The principle is based on a very low calorie intake (1000 kcal per day) and a strong restriction of carbohydrate supply. The Scarsdale diet is actually one of the first weight loss methods from the group of so-called “low carb” diets, where the carbohydrate intake is reduced dramatically. Therefore comes a lot of protein on the table, especially meat, lean fish and low-calorie vegetables for 14 days. After these 2 weeks begins a stabilisation phase in which something can be eaten more: three eggs a week, two slices of bread per day, jam with no added sugar, nuts and a glass of wine per day. After the first phase is 15 days repeated then again follows a 14-day stabilization phase. This cycle sequence can be continued for life on request, according to the inventor of the diet.

Counting calories is not necessary with this diet. However, outside the three main meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) does not allow intermediate snacks, except possibly a little raw food when needed.

Forbidden foods

All carbohydrates, formulations with fat (oil, butter, cream …), almost all dairy products, fruit juices, alcohol, sugary desserts, chocolate and sausages.

Permitted food

Celery, carrot, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, peppers, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, herbs and spices. For dressing may be used vinegar. Sweetener is replaced with sugar. Only lean protein sources (fish, meat) have been approved.

A typical daily menu

Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit or a season fruit, 1 slice protein enriched bread or 1 slice of wholemeal bread, no spreads, tea or coffee without sugar.
Lunch: a chicken, any amount of lettuce, 1 teaspoon olive oil, coffee or tea without sugar, 4 times a week a fruit
Snack: carrot or raw celery
Dinner: lean fish, any amount of low-calorie vegetables, 1 tsp sunflower oil, coffee or tea without sugar.
Result
Quickly weight loss: 4 kg in the first week, that is, 450g on average per day.
Benefits
It is not necessary to count calories or weigh portions. However, the prescribed program must be strictly adhered. The extremely reduced caloric intake guarantees fast weight loss.

Disadvantages

Since this is a highly restrictive diet program often occurs a strong feeling of hunger. The Scarsdale diet is accused of that the weight loss is only water and pounds quickly again return after the diet.

The Scarsdale diet performs once for 14 days, there are no healthy holistic risks. If several repetitions, the diet can, however, lead to deficiency symptoms.
